GPS

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a technology that uses the position of satellites to determine locations on earth. GPS can calculate the longitude and latitude of locations and transmit this information to a receiver, which enables the person using GPS to correctly locate and travel to destinations.

GPS systems are extremely versatile and can be found in almost any industry sector. They can be used to map forests, help farmers harvest their fields, and navigate airplanes on the ground or in the air. GPS systems are used in military applications and by emergency crews to locate people in need of assistance. GPS technologies are often working in many areas that we do not normally consider.

Some of the main applications that GPS technology is being used for around the world include mining, aviation, surveying, agriculture, marine, recreation, and military. Doctors, scientists, farmers, soldiers, pilots, hikers, delivery drivers, sailors, fishermen, dispatchers, athletes, and many more professions are using GPS systems in ways that make their work safer, easier and more productive.

GPS applications generally fall into 5 major categories:

     1. Location - determining a position

     2. Navigation - getting from one location to another

     3. Tracking - monitoring object or personal movement

     4. Mapping - creating maps of the world

     5. Timing - bringing precise timing to the world

Today's GPS receivers are extremely accurate, thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. GPS devices' 12 parallel channel receivers are quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain strong locks, even in dense foliage or urban settings with tall buildings. Certain atmospheric factors and other sources of interference can affect the accuracy of GPS receivers. On average most GPS receivers are accurate to within 15 meters.
